Affordability Is Key For City Breaks Tourists

eurostar breaksAffordability is the main criteria for Britons when deciding on a destination for a city break, according to research from price comparison site Kelkoo.

In a recent YouGov survey, 85% of the 2,300 interviewed, said that affordability was the most important factor, followed closely by security (81%), the weather (78%) and good food (77%).

The results of the survey have helped to create the Kelkoo City Index which provides information on climate, security, affordability, quality of food, cost of flights and accommodation, tourist attractions and exchange rates for 20 of the world’s most visited cities.

Lisbon comes in as the number one city break destination on the Kelkoo City Index, which is dominated by European cities including Athens, Istanbul, Barcelona, Krakow, Rome, Vienna, London, Kuala Lumpur and Dublin.

Bruce Fair, managing director of Kelkoo UK, commented: ‘In the current climate, British holidaymakers seem to be more cost-conscious than ever, and the trend for taking shorter but more frequent breaks is still proving popular.

‘Whilst Portugal’s capital may not be renowned for the romance of Paris or the glamour of New York, Lisbon appears to fit the bill most closely when it comes to delivering against the criteria that matter most to today’s holidaymakers – value for money, great climate and security.’

Major cities like Rio, Sydney, and Cape Town, although popular, lacked the affordability of some European cities and therefore came lower down in the index.
