Carnival Cruise Corporation has reported an improved number of summer bookings year on year. The cruise line confirmed that the numbers of bookings since March for the second half of the year are currently 26% higher than last year.
Fred. Olsen has launched a new micro site to promote the ArtsClub, a new feature which aims to help passengers get the most out of their cruises. The ArtsClub has a program of special interest cruises available on selected itineraries of all five Fred. Olsen cruise ships.
Royal Caribbean Swine Flu Update - Wed. 29 Apr. 2009
Royal Caribbean yesterday announced that they were temporarily suspending any port calls in Mexico following the emergence of Swine Flu. The decision has been made in caution and no further decision will be taken until the full impact of the virus is better understood.
Cruise line Royal Caribbean has recorded a net loss of $36.2 million in the first quarter of 2009, compared to a $75.6 million for the same period last year. Revenues of $1.3 billion were also down from the $1.4 billion achieved in the first quarter of 2008.
There was more good news for the cruise industry today as the European Cruise Council announced recent figures which suggest cruise passengers spent £13 billion in 2007, with a 22% increase.
Despite the gloom surrounding the economy, it has been suggested that the UK cruise market could still reach its target of two million passengers by 2012. A report from Carnival Cruises reaffirms last year's growth prediction even though conditions are far from perfect. Last year’s prediction was made prior to the decision to phase out Ocean Village ships from Carnival UK and before the economic downturn had taken its toll.
MSC Cruises have teamed up with video game giant Nintendo to offer the latest in interactive gaming to their cruise passengers. The MSC Fantasia is now equipped with over one hundred Nintendo Wii’s, including games such as Wii Sport and Wii fit.
Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that it is suspending fuel supplements with immediate effect for all cruises departing in 2009. The cruise line also said that all 2009 bookings within the final payment period will be refunded in the form of on-board credit.

Cruise holidays may become cheaper in 2009. Carnival UK chief executive David Dingle has admitted that its cruise brands may be forced to lower prices next year in order to increase demand which has not been as strong.
Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the seas – the largest cruise ship ever built – has finally left its shipyard ahead of its official launch in just over 12 months time. The Oasis of the seas, a 5,400 capacity cruise ship will now remain in Finland, where it was built, until it can be fitted out before heading to its new home in Florida.
