FCO advises caution to travellers in Greece
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has updated its travel advice to Greece, warning of a general threat of terrorism which has been on the increase. The advice warns of possible disturbances in major urban centres throughout the month of December, which coincides with the first anniversary of serious riots that followed the shooting of a Greek teenager last year.
The FCO warns Brits travelling to Greece to exercise caution and avoid any demonstrations. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.
It has been reported that there was some disruption yesterday as demonstrators assembled for a memorial for the teenager in Athens. A second rally is due to take place today. The FCO also advises that calling 999 from a UK mobile in Greece will also automatically transfer callers to the Greek emergency services.
