Thousands of people have been left stranded following the collapse of Flyglobespan, Scotland's biggest airline. When parent company Globespan went into administration on Wednesday, all flights were immediately cancelled, leaving over 4,000 passengers stranded.
Following the bomb attack in Mallorca on Sunday, travellers are advised to continue with their holiday plans as normal. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has updated its travel advice for Spain but the level of advice has not been changed.
Yesterday’s car bombing in Majorca which killed two Civil Guard officers, led to airports being shut for some time. Although airports have now been reopened, flights in and out of Majorca may still be disrupted.
Portugal has suffered more than many other popular destinations in terms of foreign visitor numbers according to new figures from the office of national statistics (ONS).
Ryanair, easyJet, Wizzair and Austrian Airlines have all been commended by the European Commission for making prices clearer on their websites. The European Consumer Commissioner singled out the four airlines during a speech in Brussels.
The World Travel & Tourism Council has spoken out to urge the rest of the industry not to panic in the wake of a swine flu outbreak. Despite warning that a potential pandemic could be “severe and prolonged”, the WTTC also stressed that whilst the situation is evolving rapidly, it is not cause for panic.
Euro Disney Revenues Fall By 7% - Tue. 28 Apr. 2009
The number of visitors to Euro Disney increased by 111,000 year on year accumulating in a record 7.1 million in its first half ending 31st March 2009. However, despite this increase in park visitors, revenues fell by 7.3% to £496.5 million.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 4, which specifies that there has been evidence of increased human to human transmission. For this reason, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised against all but essential travel to Mexico.
Freedom Direct Ceases Trading - Fri. 17 Apr. 2009
One of the UK’s leading online independent travel agents, Freedom Direct Holidays Ltd has ceased trading (as of 16 April 2009). Freedom Direct had been trading without an ATOL for the past fortnight following its failure to renew its license at the start of the month.
The cost of flights to a number of European destinations has dropped considerably according to a report from cheapflights.co.uk. The cheap flights search engine suggests that some fares are as much as 75% cheaper year on year, citing Mediterranean destinations such as Nice, Cannes and Barcelona as particularly strong examples.
