WHO Advises Against All Non-Essential Travel To Mexico

Tuesday, 28 April 2009

flightsThe World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 4, which specifies that there has been evidence of increased human to human transmission. For this reason, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised against all but essential travel to Mexico.

British Nationals should continue to follow local advice to avoid exposure to the influenza. Cases of the flu have been reported in Mexico City and in a number of locations across Mexico. Today, Spanish authorities have confirmed Europe's first case of swine flu in Albacete.

All travellers are advised to consult a doctor immediately if they show signs of flu-like symptoms. Swine flu is a respiratory disease, caused by influenza type A which infects pigs. Until now it has not normally infected humans, but the latest form does, and it can be spread from person to person – most likely through coughing and sneezing.

In Mexico, the Secretary of Health has advised people to avoid large crowds, shaking hands and kissing people as a greeting. Officials have also advised keeping at least six feet away from other people, as well as regular hand washing as a precaution. The Mexicans have closed educational establishments, museums and many other public venues. Any British Nationals currently in Mexico, who have an urgent consular issue should call the Embassy on (01 55) 5242 8500.For more information, visit the WHO website.
